Painted Ceramic Vases

September 27, 2020

Have you heard of “Trash to Terracotta”? Geneva Vanderzeil from Collective Gen created a paint + baking powder recipe to transform old vases into textured ceramic beauties. I’ve seen people try either baking powder or baking soda (it’s understandably easy to confuse the two) as this technique gained popularity on Instagram. I stayed true to the original recipe and used baking powder, but use whichever works for you!

Materials

Old vases/pots/containers
Paint (I used leftover interior matte paint)
Baking powder

Before

I started with 7 pieces then started grabbing everything in sight once I saw how well they turned out!

After

How I styled them

Almost all of the pieces made it onto the ladder shelf in the living room. Together, they create a beautiful, cohesive collection that I can’t get enough of!

A perfect spot for morning coffee, isn’t it?

These look amazing! Two questions: what brand and name are the green color(s)? Do you know if this would hold-up outside if I use an exterior paint? I fear using a sealer would alter the finish. Thank you

Thank you! The paint colors are a mix of what I had around, including:

        Fatigue Green – Benjamin Moore
        Windsor Green – Benjamin Moore
        Fennel Seed – Behr
        Pasha Brown – Behr
        Mink Haze – Behr
        Whisper White – Behr

As for holding up outside with exterior paint, I’m not entirely sure. I would recommend using a matte sealer for a similar texture!

Is this painting technique waterproof, i.e., can one wash out the vase when changing the flowers?
