Dowel Coffee Table

September 14, 2020

It’s surprising how much my style has changed since we furnished our home last year. After trying countless ways to make our industrial coffee table work, I decided that it was time to let it go. This baby had no problem finding a new home through FB Marketplace!

Our old industrial Kinsella Coffee Table

As always, when you can’t find something you like with the right price tag, you just have to make it yourself! I was inspired by waterfall tables and set out to create a similar look with an old IKEA tabletop and some dowels.

Materials

One 2′ x 4′ tabletop
Eight 2″ x 48″ dowels (link)
Liquid Nails (link)
Sheet sander (link)
Miter saw (link)

1. Sand the tabletop

I used an old IKEA tabletop we had around, but you can really use any tabletop for this project. Feel free to skip this step if you’re working with an unsealed piece. I sanded mine down using a sheet sander so the paint would stick better.

2. Cut the dowels

I cut each dowel into three 16″ pieces using a miter saw. They don’t have to be exactly 16″, but make sure that they are all the same length so that the table is balanced.

3. Attach the dowels to the tabletop

I made sure to dry fit them first before applying the Liquid Nails adhesive. Let it dry for a few hours before proceeding to the next step.

4. Prime and paint

I started on the bottom and the dowel legs before flipping the table over. A brush worked well on the legs, while a small roller worked best for the tabletop. Paint color: Swiss Coffee by Behr.

The Final Product

Here is how it turned out! I’m digging the sculptural look created by the fluted detail. It’s a pretty easy DIY that anyone can do given that you have the right tools. Would you give this a try?

A true success. I decided I liked it before the top was painted. A real beauty after the paint job.
