We purchased our home back in April 2019 and went through both big and small renovations to make it our own. The first project we tackled was the living room, starting with the awkward brown fireplace!
We chose Simply White OC-117 by Benjamin Moore for its neutral tone that works well with either cool or warm lights. Our vision was to create a bright, inviting space that would let our furniture and decor pieces stand out.
The white fireplace made all the difference! Instead of having a big looming presence that absorbed all the light, it now blends with the rest of the space while making the original stonework more visible.
Next step was painting the walls, window trim, baseboards, and doors. The walls needed about 3 coats of paint in matte finish. The rest needed 2 coats of KILZ 2 latex primer followed by 2-3 coats of paint in satin finish to prevent the wood from coming through. Believe me when I say there was painter’s tape everywhere!
I initially thought this would take about a week, but I was wrong. This project extended to the adjacent dining room, hallway, main floor bedrooms, and kitchen. We also began the kitchen renovation around the same time, which only delayed it further. Many thanks to my mom for flying out to help us finish painting everything in sight!
If there’s one thing that continues to amaze me, it’s the power of paint.
