If you haven’t noticed, fluted details are all the rave these days. Postmodern elements are coming back in style as the midcentury modern craze started to take a back seat (see Emily Henderson’s blog posts on postmodernism and how it’s finally mainstream). In fact, this wouldn’t be my first time making a fluted piece – have you seen my latest DIY coffee table? I actually planned out this side table long before the coffee table, but had to wait 3 weeks for the half-round moulding to be delivered. And naturally, it took double that for me to write this blog post… Read on to see how I flipped an ugly Facebook Marketplace find into a gorgeous postmodern marble table.
Before
We drove 50 minutes one way to pick up this two-piece side table. It is a marble top placed on an old wood base.

1. Cut the MDF boards
Measure out the dimensions you need and cut the boards to size (we got these cut at Home Depot). This will become the façade that surrounds the existing table base.
2. Make a box
Attach the boards using corner braces as shown below.
3. Cut the half-rounds
We actually ran out of moulding, but it was easy enough to glue scrap pieces together to make more.
4. Apply the half-rounds to the MDF box
Do this to all four sides using an adhesive. After it’s finished, slide the box over the table base and place the marble slab on top.
